No Launcher at hand, for example on a school or shared computer? Sign in on minecraft.net with your Microsoft account, open your profile, choose Minecraft: Java Edition and select Change Skin. Choose Classic or Slim, upload the PNG and confirm. It is the same skin as in the Launcher, because the skin is stored on your account, not on the computer.

If your skin does not show

Rejoin the world or server. Skins load when you join; press F5 in-game to see yourself.
Wrong arms? A stripe of odd pixels on the arms means the model does not match. Edit the skin in the Launcher and switch between Classic and Slim.
Real PNG? A JPG renamed to .png will not upload. Download the skin again as PNG.
Server rules. Some servers use their own skins or turn custom skins off.
Other launchers. Third-party launchers and offline accounts handle skins differently; the official Launcher and minecraft.net are the supported ways.
