Slim vs classic arms: which one should your skin use?

Classic (Steve) arms are 4 pixels wide, slim (Alex) arms are 3. How to tell which one a skin uses, what goes wrong with the wrong one, and how to pick.

Quick answer: Classic arms (the Steve model) are 4 pixels wide; slim arms (the Alex model) are 3 pixels wide. A skin is painted for one of them, so choose the same model when you import it. If you pick the wrong one, the arms show a stripe of the wrong colour or look cut off.

Slim arms arrived in Java Edition 1.8 together with Alex. Today Minecraft has nine default characters, and each of them comes in both arm styles, so neither model is “for boys” or “for girls”.

How to check a skin

  1. Open the PNG in the skin editor (Open PNG).
  2. Switch between Classic arms and Slim arms under the 3D player.
  3. The right one has clean arms. The wrong one shows a stripe of empty or odd pixels on the side, or looks cut off.

In the flat PNG, a slim skin's arm front is 3 pixels wide and the 4th column next to it is empty or unused.

Why simply switching the model is not enough

If you import a classic skin as slim, Minecraft drops one pixel column from each arm, and the arm's back and sides no longer line up. Converting properly means moving the pixels of every arm face so the pattern still wraps around the arm. Our AI generator does this for you: after making a skin, pick Slim arms and the download is a real slim skin, not a cut-off classic one.

Which one should you pick?

  • Pick the one the skin was painted for. That matters more than taste.
  • When making a new skin, choose whichever looks better on the 3D preview. Slim suits thin sleeves and dresses; classic suits armor, hoodies and robots.
  • Set the same model when you import: in the Java Launcher (Classic/Slim) or in the Bedrock Dressing Room. See the Java and Bedrock guides.

Questions people ask

How do I know if a skin is slim or classic?

Look at the arms in the PNG. If the front of each arm is 3 pixels wide and there is an empty column next to it, the skin is slim. If the arms are 4 pixels wide, it is classic.

Are slim arms only for girl skins?

No. Any character can use slim arms. It is just a thinner arm shape; plenty of boy skins use it and plenty of girl skins use classic.

What happens if I choose the wrong arm model?

With a classic skin on slim arms, one pixel column of each arm is hidden. With a slim skin on classic arms, you see a stripe of empty or wrong pixels on the arm.

Can I convert a skin between slim and classic?

Yes. Our generator can download any AI skin as classic or slim; it moves the arm pixels for you instead of just cutting a column off.
